Sé Young Kim is a Korean-American artist based in the Netherlands. Originally born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, before moving to the United States, her work embodies transience and progression. Constantly exploring the idea of identity formation, she draws from her experience of uprooting along with her own journey of melding cultures and places that at times seem to contradict one another. As identity can be shaped throughout time and environment, her works are a reflection of finding a sense of true self—a life-long practice she continues to contextualize through her paintings and sculptures.

From the tactile act of scraping paint off the canvas to layering with heavy brushstrokes, her process is emotive, instinctive, and honest. Drawing inspiration from Dansaekhwa, she carries the characteristics of this Korean movement into her body of work.
